Murray Energy

Since 1974, the Murray name has been synonymous with successful steel supply solutions to the Oil and Gas Sector. This industry leading pedigree provides the foundation for Murray Energy's future

The Murray family name is arguably the most recognised brand name in the energy markets when it comes to the supply and distribution of carbon steel products.  Murray Energy is a business built on a wealth of experience stretching back over 40 years to its founder and current Chairman, Sir David E Murray.

In 1968 David E Murray secured his first job at the age of 17 after responding to an advert for an Aluminium sales trainee.  Having experienced early success in the metals industry working for others, he started his own business in 1974 Murray International Metal Services.

Seeing an opportunity within the growing North Sea, oil and gas industry, Murray International Metals capitalised on first mover advantage for the growing demand in the supply of high yield carbon steel with low temperature impact properties required for the harsh environments of the North Sea construction for oil rig jackets, top sides and related infrastructure.

Having established prominence in steel supply to the energy sector, Sir David continued to expand domestic and international operations with global offices including Europe, Middle East, Asia and the Americas.

In 1981 Forth Steel was added to the now extensive portfolio of steel businesses as a value added proposition with oxygas steel profiling.   Initially developed to complement existing steel plate supply operations of Murray International Metals, Forth Steel established itself as a standalone brand in the market place, providing high quality steel processing solutions to the oil and gas, general engineering and fabrication markets and remains a key product and service offering of Murray Energy today.

Successful and rapid organic growth and acquisition saw David Murray win the SBAAT Award for Young Scottish Businessman of the Year in 1984 and he received an Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University in 1986.

The formation of the Murray Metals Group consolidated an impressive and diverse group of metals businesses with Turnover in excess of £350m GBP.  Seeing acquisition and organic growth as important as well timed divestment, in 2005 Murray Metals Group divested the Murray International Metals division to an Amercian Private Equity firm, re-investing profits in expanding the retained businesses through further acquisitions.

In 2007 David was knighted by the Queen at Holyrood Palace for his services to business, followed in 2008 by the award of an Honorary Doctorate bestowed on him by Edinburgh University.

Despite challenging global economic conditions starting in 2009, the diverse portfolio of Murray Metals businesses have ensured that not only do we have the experience and knowledge to maintain business continuity in uncertain economic times but indeed, unrivalled intimate understanding of the energy and steel markets have seen the business proposer where competition has faltered.

Building on the groups increased activity in the international markets in 2012, particularly in Asia, Murray Energy was established to consolidate the groups world class credentials for multi product, steel distribution solution to the energy markets.
